J100 Launches History, Health and Wellness 5K

The 100 Black Men of Jacksonville, Inc. (J100) has long tradition of community service and has made an impact on youth through mentoring programs and educational initiatives.  Last weekend, the organization expanded their health focus by launching the inaugural History, Health and Wellness 5K presented by Chase.

The leading cause of death for African American males is heart disease followed by cancer. The J100 kicked off the recent health-focused event with the goal of bringing communities and families together while focusing on raising awareness of the health disparities that are prevalent in the Black community.

“We know that participation in regular physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits, including lower risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. And one of the best parts of this effort was engaging residents of this historic community,” said President of the 100 Black Men of Jacksonville, Inc. Charles Griggs.

He added, “Because of partners like Chase, we are able to provide organized health and wellness activities while featuring historic areas of Jacksonville.”

Running enthusiasts, walkers and J100 supporters participated to raise funds and awareness for the organization’s Bernard V. Gregory Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund awards annual scholarships to incoming freshmen and returning college students in the Jacksonville area. The 3.1-mile course ran through New Town and Historic Durkeeville communities, and according to organizers it was the perfect race for youth and first time runners and walkers.

The 100 Black Men of Jacksonville, Inc. (J100) a chapter of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., has been serving the Jacksonville community through its mission of mentoring youth since 1991.
