Friends and Family Commemorate Jordan Davis 25th Birthday

The community continues to mourn the loss of a young man taken too soon. Jordan Davis was a 17-year-old high school student when he was murdered for playing his music “too loud”. On what would have been his 25th birthday, Davis’ father, friends and family came together for a commemorative celebration in the spirit of making sure the community treasures the loss of every young life. Family and friends gathered at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church for free food, fun activities and a twenty-five balloon release commemorating Jordan’s birthday.  Concluding the program was a commemoration birthday letter from Mayor Lenny Curry presented to Jordan’s father Ron Davis. “As we optimistically gaze forward for the hope of our future, we celebrate the children, adults and elders with us today,” said co-organizer Dr. Albert Chester.

Davis was murdered on Friday, November 23, 2012, at a Gate Petroleum gas station on Baymeadows Road by Michael David Dunn, a 45-year-old millionaire software developer in town for a wedding. The shooting happened following an argument over loud music played by Davis and his three friends. Dunn was convicted on three counts of attempted second-degree murder for firing at three other teenagers who were with Davis and one count of firing into a vehicle and first-degree murder of Jordan Davis. He is serving a life sentence.

Davis’ mother, Lucy McBath now a Congresswoman ran and won Georgia’s 6th congressional district in 2018, running on a platform that included reform of gun laws.  Shown at the balloon release L-R is Attorney John Phillips, Marvin Boone, Ron Davis and Dr. Albert Chester.
