Jacksonville, FL – Early in the morning Saturday, September 30th, the 100 Black Men of Jacksonville, Inc. (J100) hosted The Delfeayo Marsalis Youth Jazz Experience at The Young Women’s and Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Eugene Butler. The free event was an interactive workshop for youth on the history of jazz and culture, hosted by Delfeayo Marsalis.
More than 60 students, parents and supporters sat in and participated as Marsalis provided instruction and insight on jazz musicians, improvisation styles and technical execution. The workshop highlighted the importance of jazz as a musical foundation, and its influence on today’s music genres. The youth jazz workshop signaled the start of the J100 Project Success Mentoring Program year activities, which will run through May of 2018.
The workshop also featured local artist and the Young Women’s and Young Men’s Leadership Academy at Eugene Butler Music Director Lawrence Buckner (bass), along with John Lumpkin (drums) and Dr. Longineu Parsons (trumpet).
