Pastors Continue Relentless Efforts to Release Alleged Racist Judge from the Bench

First Timothy Baptist Church and pastors from Duval County addressed the media again this week regarding the Judicial Qualifying Committee’s Panel’s findings that there is probable cause to charge Judge Mark Hulsey with using anti-black language and behaving improperly as a judge.
The press conference was held on the grounds of First Timothy Baptist Church where host pastor. Reverend F. D. Newbill, was joined by a dozen local pastors to address the alleged derogatory, racial comments made by the sitting judge.
Pastor Newbill and others called for Duval Judge Mark Hulsey to immediately resign for telling his judicial assistant that “he wished all blacks could be sent back to Africa on a boat.”
Earlier this month Rev. Newbill sent a letter to Chief Judge Mark Mahon asking the Chief Judge not to assign cases involving Blacks to Hulsey’s Courtroom. After mailing a letter to the Judicial Qualifying Committee, the JQC investigated the reported incident and released the results of their investigation; the filings resulted in 14 formal charges against Hulsey for alleged racist language, alleged sexually derogatory language, and alleged mistreatment of courthouse attorneys.
Due to the findings, Judge Hulsey has already been reassigned to probate court. “We are also appalled at the local Black attorneys that have supported Hulsey. It was the Judicial Qualifications Commission, an organization comprised of Judge Hulsey’s fellow judges, lawyers and citizens. A recent study showed that of the last 78 cases in which probable cause was found charges were filed, only one judge of the entire 78 was successful in refuting the charges,” said Newbill. Newbill also noted that Judge Hulsey’s father created the JQC when the elder Hulsey was president of the Florida Bar. His father ended up serving on the JQC for 12 years. Newbill and the pastors have vowed a series of protests and marches if Judge Hulsey is not completely released from the bench.
